Garment Care for your Summer Linens
As the weather gets progressively warmer, we naturally gravitate towards lighter, more breathable fabrics. Our fabric of choice for this Summer? Linen, all day, every day!
It’s important to remember that each fabric is completely different when it comes to care requirements, so it’s a great rule of thumb to check the garment’s care tag instructions first!
A brief overview of Linen
Linen is a gorgeous natural fibre, derived from the flax plant and is a big-ticket item for Australian summers due to its breathable nature. Natural linen is a thermoregulator, which means when it’s cold out, the fibres contract which keeps you warm. The fibres then expand when it’s hot out, which allows your body heat to escape and cool you down. It’s actually the world’s strongest fibre and it's also one of the only fibres that becomes stronger when wet!
Washing
Linens can be machine-washed, but if you’re looking to extend the life of the fabric, it’s best to hand-wash in cold water. Washing in the machine on a cold cycle is a happy compromise if you’re not a fan of hand-washing.
Avoid using harsh laundry detergents for your linens. We recommend opting for a mild soap or gentle detergent instead.
It’s important to note that linen is a highly absorbent material, so it’s best to wash it separately from garments made of other fabrics.
Drying
We recommend you dry your linen pieces on a padded hanger, or flat on a drying rack. Avoid tumble-drying as a general rule, and opt for air-drying your linens instead. It’s better for the planet that way too!
Ironing
As linen is a heavier weight fabric, it’s easy to crease and crinkle, but straightforward to correct as it can handle a fair amount of temperature when ironing. Our secret tip is to iron your linens while they are slightly damp - the heat from the iron will dry the fabric and remove wrinkles a lot easier.
